Supercarrier Christened

Ford Class CarrierThe next generation aircraft carrier Gerald R. Ford (CVN 78) was christened on Saturday, November 9, 2013. In the Military Ranks App under the Navy Gear | Ships section – the three US Navy aircraft carrier classes are described: Enterprise Class, Nimitz Class and Ford Class. CVN 78 is the first Ford-class aircraft carrier christened in the US Navy. Other planned Ford-class aircraft carriers include the USS John F. Kennedy (CVN 79) and CVN 80 (not named).

Ford-class aircraft carriers are a class of supercarriers intended eventually to replace the current Nimitz-class carriers. Ford-class carriers include new technologies such as the Electromagnetic Aircraft Launch System as well as design features that improve efficiency and running costs.
